Moringa FAQ

What is moringa oleifera?

Moringa Oleifera is a fast growing, drought resistant tree native to south Asia and parts of Africa. There is evidence that the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans utilized moringa in their diets and for topical healing purposes. In India, moringa leaves and seed pods are traditionally used to make a variety of dishes. Practitioners of Ayurvedic Medicine say moringa aids in the prevention and treatment of over 300 diseases.

Today, moringa is grown all over the world, and many Asian, South American and African cultures supplement their diets with this so called “Miracle Tree”. Additionally, moringa seeds have shown water purification properties.

Why should I supplement my diet with moringa?

The old adage “Our health is our greatest wealth” still rings true. While we now have an array of modern medicines to treat previously fatal diseases, our modern diets have become the cause of many of our health issues. But food should prevent sickness, not create it.

Eating right is a tricky habit in our busy, over scheduled lives. Moringa makes it convenient and easy for your body to absorb the vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and amino acids it needs.

Moringa is a nutritional powerhouse containing the following:

  • 25 vitamins & minerals
  • 46 active anti-oxidants
  • 36 anti-inflamatories
  • 18 amino acids (including all 8 essential aminos, rare for a plant)

Compared to common foods, moringa contains:

7x the Vitamin C found in oranges, 4x the Vitamin A of carrots, 4x the calcium of milk and 3x potassium of bananas.

Is there documentation supporting moringa’s benefits?

What traditional cultures have known for centuries, modern science is now proving.  Here is a list of international studies and articles on the nutritional value of moringa, including a laboratory test done on moringamio’s own moringa oleifera leaves:

In a recent independent (in vitro) study conducted by Brunswick Laboratories, moringamio’s moringa powder was tested to determine its Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (or ORAC value score). The ORAC value score is a measurement of antioxidants in foods and supplements. Antioxidants are compounds which actively quench free-radicals and this helps to prevent cellular damage, the common pathway for cancer, aging and a variety of diseases.

With an impressive score of 157,000 umole TE/100g (hydrophilic and lipophilic) Moringa oleifera powder topped all other antioxidant superfoods, beating out rivals such as turmeric at 127,000, acai at 102,700, cocoa powder at 55,653, pomegranates at 4,479 and blueberries at only 2,400.

How does moringa taste?

Moringa has a grassy, nutty flavor. For some it is a bit strong. If you fall into this category, moringa's taste can be masked quite easily. For example a bit of honey in moringa tea covers the taste quite well.

How much moringa should I add to my diet?

Too much moringa can produce a laxative effect. We recommend starting with a teaspoon of moringa powder per day (building up to 2 tablespoons if no ill effects are experienced), two cups of tea per day (1 tea bag per cup) and no more than 4 moringa capsules per day.

Are there any precautions I should take around moringa supplements?

Aside from the above suggested daily intake, pregnant and nursing mothers should consult their physician before supplementing their diet with moringa.

Is moringa safe for children?

Absolutely. Moringa has shown to be completely safe for children.  We suggest giving them half the daily recommended amount as for adults. Again, consult your family doctor if you have concerns around allergies.

How should I use moringa leaf powder?

Moringamio leaf powder can be used in virtually any recipe or culinary creation. We like to add a couple tablespoons to smoothies, sprinkle it into salads, blend it into puddings and mix it into muffins. For some inspiration visit our moringamio Instagram page.

How should I store moringamio’s leaf powder?

Our moringa leaf powder should be stored in a cool, dry place and sealed after every use to ensure its freshness.

How is moringamio’s leaf powder processed?

First, our organically grown moringa leaves are slow dried using completely natural methods. Our partners are careful to keep the leaves out of the sun  to avoid burning or browning. Next, the dry leaves are ground into a fine, rich green powder. Now the powder is quickly sealed and shipped from Ecuador to our processing facility in Connecticut. Finally, the powder is checked for absolute quality and packaged for the consumer market.

Can I cook with moringa leaf powder?

Sure! Although we recommend adding the leaf powder after cooking with high heat. This ensures none of the nutritional value is lost.

Does moringamio’s leaf powder contain any other ingredients?

No. Our moringa leaf powder contains nothing but 100%  pure organic moringa oleifera leaves.

Does processing moringa leaves reduce their nutritional value?

Yes and no. Moringa leaves are quite small in size, meaning you would have to pick and eat quite a lot of leaves to equal the potency of moringa leaf powder. In other words, we believe the density of nutrients in our powder is higher than in an equal amount of fresh leaves.

How many cups of moringa tea should I drink per day?

We recommend two cups of moringamio tea per day.

Does moringamio’s tea contain caffeine?

No, our tea is 100% caffeine-free. Moringa does, however, provide a boost of sustained energy without the crash normally experienced with caffeinated beverages.

How long should I steep moringa tea?

Five minutes steeping should be just about right.

Does moringamio’s tea have an expiration date?

Unopened, moringa tea keeps for about two years.

None. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Our tea contains nothing but premium organic dried moringa leaves.

Is moringamio’s tea organic? Vegan? Non-GMO? Raw?

Yes, our moringa tea is organic, vegan, non-GMO and raw.

How many moringa capsules should I take per day?

Two servings of two moringa capsules per day is optimal.

Do moringamio capsules contain any added ingredients?
